Not Always So

The secret of Zen is just two words: not always so. —Shunryu Suzuki Roshi

I saw this quote on the front of a church bulletin. It is not a toss-off  motto like the “Life is Good” t-shirts seen from coast to coast. It’s a phrase that makes you pause and think, “Huh?”. Your brain wants to reconcile the meaning with the words the eyes are reading. I like the dissonance. I also like the implied warning–things are not always what they seem–objects in mirror are closer than they appear–you can’t tell a book by its cover–still waters run deep–don’t eat yellow snow.
